Behind the Walls of CyBear Lair: A Phius House in Progress

Date and Time:
Friday, January 17th
11:30 AM – 1:00 PM

About the project:

CyBear Lair began in the mind of the client to build a legacy home, that would be beautiful, net zero energy and last for generations. With some specific parameters in mind, we looked at the options available to be the design guide for this home. Phius certification satisfied all of the client’s goals, and then some. It became the guide for which the design would be based. The client’s request to use no formaldehyde products, nor petroleum-based products, led to challenges in materials selections. A double wall enclosure, with two layers of I-Joist trusses allowed the R-values and air barrier requirements to be met. Rockwool insulation, both batts and boards, below and above grade, provided the insulation values. A solar array built for the all-electric powered home is designed for the net zero energy requirement. An ERV coupled with an air-to-air heat pump provides an efficient HVAC system. Zola triple paned windows were the final key to achieve the WUFI heating demand requirements for Phius design certification. Prairie inspired design features along with the newest energy savings technology and design will ensure a beautiful, next generation home for our climate.

The tour will be lead by:

Andy Ostrem (Estimator), Iowa Home Crafters
Dave Rogotzske (Production Manager), Iowa Home Crafters

Andy graduated from DMACC with an associates degree and an architectural millwork certification. Most of his customer experience comes from many years of retail management. He spent several years as a designer/sales person for a Design + Build contractor in Des Moines, and 5 years with a custom cabinet shop. He has been remodeling and revitalizing homes since he was a kid, with his parents. He’s had a passion for older homes and historic preservation, including work on his personal homes. He has been happily married to his wife for 19 years, and they have two boys in high school. They enjoy being outdoors and spending time camping.  His family has been a part of the Des Moines Y Camp family for two generations.

Dave is the head of production and is responsible for making sure projects are packaged and ready for the field crews when they are needed. He’ll also pre-order materials prior to the project beginning to keep things running smoothly. While this sounds like a lot of desk work, he’s not too proud to pick up a hammer or shovel when needed. He’s been with Iowa Home Crafters since 2012. He started in the field as a project foreman and worked into this position right before Chaden bought the company. Prior to his time there, he was self-employed as a carpenter specializing in interior trim and cabinetry. When he’s not working, his time is spent trying to maintain and improve his 130-year-old house. There is no shortage of projects.
